Introducing 2202 Class 80 Lean Duplex Fasteners: A Stronger, More Sustainable Alternative

1 April 2025

A Stronger, More Sustainable Alternative to Carbon Steel

Stainless steel is increasingly becoming the material of choice for industry and construction due to its lower environmental impact and long life cycle compared to galvanized carbon steel.

Anzor Fasteners is proud to be the New Zealand agent for the new range of LEAN Duplex 2202 Class 80 stainless steel fasteners—a high-tensile, corrosion-resistant alternative to 8.8 carbon steel fasteners. Even better, these fasteners come at a price slightly lower than 304 stainless steel, offering superior strength and durability at an affordable cost.

What is 2202 Stainless Steel?

2202 is a lean duplex stainless steel (UNS S32001, EN 1.4482) designed with lower nickel and higher chromium and nitrogen content, ensuring excellent corrosion resistance and cost savings. As a duplex stainless steel, it combines ferritic and austenitic structures, providing exceptional mechanical properties and environmental benefits.

Why Choose 2202 Over 304, 316, or Carbon Steel Fasteners?

  • Superior Corrosion Resistance – 2202 performs exceptionally well in acidic environments and neutral salt spray tests, surpassing 304 and comparable to 316.
  • Higher Mechanical Strength – With a tensile strength of 800 MPa and yield strength of 600 MPa, 2202 far exceeds 304 stainless steel, particularly at elevated temperatures (at 300°C, it has twice the yield strength of 304).
  • Outstanding Fatigue Resistance – 2202 provides over three times the fatigue resistance of 304 stainless steel.
  • Cost Efficiency – With its higher strength, less material is required, reducing overall costs and weight. Additionally, due to its lower nickel and molybdenum content, 2202 is approximately 5% cheaper than 304 stainless steel and significantly more affordable than 316, while still maintaining excellent corrosion resistance.
  • Sustainability2202 stainless steel emits only 2.21 CO₂ equivalents per ton, compared to 4.64 CO₂ for carbon steel (which also requires additional surface treatments). Plus, stainless steel is 100% recyclable and predominantly made from recycled content, making it the most environmentally responsible choice.

Ideal Applications for 2202 Fasteners

With its high strength, corrosion resistance, and sustainability, 2202 is an ideal choice for:

Infrastructure projects
Machinery and equipment
Chemical processing applications
Construction in chloride-rich or acidic environments

2202 Lean Duplex is a proven and reliable stainless steel option, now available (to order from offshore) in a range of fasteners, including Hex Head Setscrews and Nuts. It is an ideal solution for New Zealand’s infrastructure and construction projects.
